6.11 STEM teachers and leaders participate in a continuous program of STEM-specific professional learning.
School Level
STEM teachers and leaders at Michael C. Riley have had extensive opportunities for continuous professional development in the areas of STEM-specific learning.
The entire faculty has been involved in intensive, holistic professional development trainings and workshops with Rhett Nettles, a consultant from the S2TEM Center SC. This has occurred over the course of a three-year period.

Our school’s designated consultant has also worked in classrooms with teachers, modeling lessons, observing and offering feedback, sharing resources, and offering guidance in planning.
District Level
Teachers have also been involved in STEM professional development at the district level, through Beaufort County’s annual Summer Institute. Many teachers and leaders from Michael C. Riley have attended trainings and sessions related to many various aspects of STEM teaching and learning. This includes sessions led by experts at the district level, researchers from university-level institutions, and a three-day institute with trainers from Engineering by Design related to their TEEMs curriculum.
District-level professional development is also offered through an annual “Best Practices Day” during the school year, in which teachers continuously engage in sharing ideas with other educators from around the district. Michael C. Riley has sent multiple teams of teachers to share best practices related to STEM, student leadership, and self-accountability with other educators.
For the past several years, teachers from Michael C. Riley have also had the opportunity to collaborate with other teachers across the district to develop curriculum maps in all subjects, notably in the STEM-specific areas of engineering, science, and math instruction.
National Level
Our school has been fortunate to send teams of teachers and administrators to regional and national STEM conferences in 2012, 2013, and 2014. NSTA conferences have been excellent opportunities for our educators to network with STEM teachers and experts from around the country, and become involved with nationwide opportunities and resources for bringing STEM to our students.
